Art Show

The Ka’u Chamber of Commerce art show to select the cover for The Directory 2017 is set for Tuesday, November 15 – Friday, November 18 at the Na’alehu Hongwanji. The theme is “Beauty of Ka’u.” There are 10 categories for entries: graphics, woodworking, craft, photography, sculpture, jewelry, lei, painting, weaving, and quilting. There are 3 divisions: adult, youth, and keiki. The fee is $5 per entry for adults, $2.50 per entry for youth in grades 7-12, and $1 per entry for keiki in grades 1-6. No more than 3 entries may come from an artist, and no more than one entry per category. All entries are eligible to compete in the popular vote for the cover, including youth and keiki, with the exception of all previous cover winners. All pieces must have been completed in the last 12 months. Entries will be accepted on Monday, November 14, from 9 a.m. until 6:30 p.m.

Applications will be available at the Hongwanji when you submit your entries Monday.

During the week of the show, business owners have the opportunity to sponsor a work of art by making a donation to the Chamber and sponsoring the artist entry fee. Sponsors will be allowed to show the sponsored art at their place of business for up to three weeks.

The show will be open to the public beginning Tuesday, November 15 through Friday, November 18 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Each day during the showing, the public may sign in and receive a ballot to vote for their favorite entry. The adult winner of the popular vote will be announced November 19 at 11 a.m. and will be featured on the cover of The Directory 2017, receive $50, and an article inside The Directory. The ballot, a numbered ticket, will also be entered into a drawing for door prizes, and winners will be announced Saturday, November 19. Participants are responsible to come by Saturday to see if they have won and to claim their prize. No phone calls will be issued. Prizes will be donated by various Ka’u merchants.

A panel of local artists will judge entries and award prizes in each category, including Best in Show. Each category will be awarded with first, second, and third prizes and, if appropriate, as many as two honorable mentions. Ribbons will be given for each of the prizes, and all first-prize winners will appear in The Directory 2017.

A reception to view the winners and greet the artists will be from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 19, with light refreshments provided.

Entry forms will be made available at local schools and merchants and will be available at the door on November 14. All entries must be picked up by the artist between 11 a.m. and 11:50 a.m. on Saturday, November 19.
